Benin: NDLEA destroys N569m worth of cannabis By Osagie Otabor The Nation Saturday 21 May 2011 Also, 59 major drug traffickers arrested by the anti-drug agency have been prosecuted in the state. The Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, who was represented by the Director General of the agency, Femi Ajayi, said the consignment of cannabis was the largest to be destroyed in the country so far. Giade said the battle against illicit drugs was crucial to the actualisation of the national economic vision to become one of the 20 most industrialised countries in 2020. He warned land owners to desist from allowing the use of their plots for illicit drug activities, saying they would be prosecuted in accordance with the NDLEA Act. "We are winning the war against illicit drug trafficking and will sustain the momentum. The removal of Nigeria from the drug major list by the United States is a great source of inspiration to us," he said. Edo State Commander of NDLEA, Fred Ezeorah, said raids on drug flash points in the state revealed that Junior Secondary School students are among cannabis users. He said his command would continue to launch attacks on drug traffickers in the state. Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who was represented by the state’s Head of Service, Anthony Edokpayi, said the volume of cannabis and other narcotics in the streets was mind-boggling.
