UK: Man fined for possessing cannabis tells magistrates 'this is a joke'
Bristol Post Wednesday 25 May 2011 Patrick Straughan, 28, of Shaftesbury Avenue, Montpelier, admitted possessing 2.1g of the class B drug. Andrea Edwards, prosecuting at Bristol Magistrates' Court yesterday, explained that on May 5 police arrived at The Canteen bar in Stokes Croft. "Officers had cause to search Straughan and found a packet of green vegetable matter in his coat," she said. "He said it was for his own use and that he bought it from a man in the street for £20. "He told officers he was aware that possessing cannabis was illegal." The court heard Straughan had one previous conviction and two cautions for drugs possession. Straughan, who represented himself, said he had lost his job because of this incident. "I was at work when I was arrested, which meant I lost my job," he said. "I was planning to go to South America in September but now this means I can't go for at least six months. "The whole thing is a waste of time – I think I should have been given a caution, it's all escalated. "I am really sorry but this is all a complete waste of time." Straughan was fined £50 and ordered to pay £85 costs plus a £15 victim surcharge. Before he left the dock he told magistrates: "This is a joke – all that for £20 worth of weed? "What do you want me to pay with? Pennies? Buttons?" Straughan was ordered to leave the dock quietly. http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/courts/Man-fined-possessing-cannabis-tells-magistrates-joke/article-3592518-detail/article.html
