Ireland: Aer Lingus steward dismissed over marijuana cookie

The Irsish Emigrant

Tuesday 21 Jun 2011

Miguel Saez Sanchez, who worked as a steward for Aer Lingus, became delusional on a flight after eating a cookie which contained marijuana. When he was subsequently dismissed, his attempt to argue that the airline treated him unfairly was rejected by a tribunal.

Sanchez (32) claimed that he unknowingly ate the cookie at a friend's party in Los Angeles. When he reported for work, he apparently "became emotional on board," because he believed certain passengers were "plants" from the airline. He also believed that there were fleas and lice on his face, and felt that passengers were mocking him while taking his photo on the flight out of San Francisco in March 2009.

The former steward had not only ingested cannabis but had also been taking diet pills, which are banned by Aer Lingus, prior to the flight. Sanchez said that he had used marijuana at the age of 19 and had never tried it since then because of its adverse effects. He failed to inform other cabin crew members initially because he hadn’t felt any change after eating the cookie some 24 hours earlier.

An Employment Appeals Tribunal deemed his dismissal by Aer Lingus to be fair, saying:

"The tribunal believes that by his acts and omissions, the claimant was guilty of serious misconduct…Taken in conjunction with his previous employment record, the decision of the respondent to dismiss the claimant was justified."

It emerged at the hearing that Sanchez had been disciplined by Aer Lingus for misconduct prior to the marijuana incident.
