On Saturday thousands of Brazilians in 40 towns and cities held marches in support of marijuana legalization – including 2,000 people in Sao Paulo – according to Brazilian media reports.

Last Wednesday Brazil's Supreme Court ruled that the marches were legal (although no smoking would be allowed), saying freedom of expression was more important than a law against justifying crimes – marijuana being illegal in the country.

Although there were some reports of people smoking cannabis during this weekend's marches, there were no immediate reports of arrests or clashes with police.

It just goes to show you the universal appeal of freedom, whether it's marijuana marchers in the U.S. and Brazil or protestors in the Middle East. Freedom will always be an issue where governments and citizens collide, and in the long run, it cannot be denied.
