UK: Extra police help to clear town of drugs problems

Carmarthen Journal

Tuesday 21 Jun 2011

INCREASED policing in Ammanford has made the town a "no-go" area for people who take and deal drugs, according to local councillors.

The comments came after a drugs bust in which officers found 160 cannabis plants in a house in High Street.

The number of individual arrests for possession also plummeted to just three in the past month.

Ammanford county councillor Hugh Evans said: "It's very possible that this bust means progress is being made close to the source of the problem. The police are quite proactive and these are good signals from them."

Talking about the decreased number of individual arrests, he added: "It shows Ammanford is a no-go area for drugs.

"The message is becoming pretty clear: don't go into this part of the world because we will pick you up."

This latest incident was a police raid on Monday night.

Officers swooped on what they called a "drugs factory" in High Street and recovered around 160 cannabis plants.

One man, 35-year-old Hau Van Neguien, was arrested and charged with producing cannabis.

He appeared before Llanelli Magistrates' Court last week, where he was committed to Swansea Crown Court to appear on July 15.

Town councillor Wendy Evans is a staunch anti-drugs campaigner and regularly grills police on the subject in town council meetings.

But she said the latest figures were encouraging.

"What we have got to appreciate is the time it take to arrest the right people — it's time consuming.

"The problem is, it has not been happening fast enough for us in the past. But now it's getting better.

"They are beginning to know where the problems are."

Police in Ammanford have been criticised in the past for what has been perceived as a drug problem in the town.

Figures released earlier this year for the party drug mephedrone showed there had been more arrests in Ammanford than in the far larger town of Llanelli.

But recently officers said they had returned a "fabulous" detection rate of 88.6 per cent in May.
