UK: Drug dealer escapes jail for good of society
The Metro Saturday 25 Jun 2011 The 24-year-old pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to charges of possessing and supplying cannabis, and possessing and offering to supply cocaine. Holland had been arrested after police officers smelled cannabis when they pulled his car over. They found both cannabis and cocaine in the vehicle, as well as 500 text messages detailing arrangements for drug deals on his mobile phone. His defence lawyer, Tim Evans, asked the judge not to jail the doctor's son, who had admitted turning to dealing to help fund his own drug habit. Mr Evans described Holland as a skilled bio-chemist who was studying towards a PhD. 'He has a lot to offer the scientific community and may well be able to use his scientific ability to benefit other people,' he added. Lord Justice Hughes heeded the advice and gave Holland a 12-month suspended jail term and 200 hours of unpaid work. The judge also told Holland he was at an important point in his life. 'You can choose to become a successful scientist with all the rewards that may bring. Or you can become a drug dealer and serve increasingly long sentences in jail,' he said.
