UK: Drugs are 'real evil' behind addict selling stolen goods

Cambridge News

Thursday 14 Jul 2011

A drug addict jailed for more than three years is the last criminal to be given a custodial sentence in relation to Operation Northwood.

Kevin Wells, 25, of Wilson Close, King’s Hedges, Cambridge, was sentenced to 39 months for conspiracy to convert stolen goods after a jury found him guilty at a trial this week.

He took part in a burglary at Thatchers Wood, Longstanton, on April 28, 2010, with prolific house-breaker Anthony Gawthrop – previously sentenced for his involvement in the huge burglar ring.

John Farmer, prosecuting at Cambridge Crown Court, said items worth £24,627 were taken from the burglary, including two cars worth £21,000.

Wells then took part in the sale of some of the goods with an undercover police officer, known as Tommy, who was running Wardy's Wheels – a store on the junction of Arbury Road and Milton Road set up as part of the sting.

Michael Duffy, defending, said that the "real evil" behind Wells's involvement in the crime was his addiction to cannabis and recreational use of cocaine.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth said: "You are a prolific criminal ready to try your hand to most sorts of crime and it's equally evident that you have problems with drugs."

He sentenced him to 39 months in prison reduced by 143 days for the time he has spent tagged.

Carol Hardy, 46, of Roland Close, Arbury, the mother of prolific burglar Aaron Spencer – already convicted for his part – was also sentenced after admitting converting stolen goods the same day.

She was given an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months, while Shaun Thierny, 30, of Minerva Way, King’s Hedges, also pleaded guilty to the same offence and was sentenced to an 18-month community order in which he has to complete 175 hours' unpaid community work.

Shaun Frost, 36, of Grassy Corner, Fen Road, Cambridge was dubbed a "thorn in the flesh of the community" by Judge Hawkesworth, and was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, with supervision.

He is also required to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.
