Ireland: First drug case before local Court (1971)
The Argus Wednesday 13 Jul 2011 The first case to come before Dundalk District Court involving the illegal use of drugs caused quite a stir when it was heard at a court in July, 1971. Before the court was a Belfast man who was holidaying in Dundalk from his work in London. He had previously lived in Dundalk with relatives for some time. He was found in possession of Indian Hemp (Cannabis) when he was questioned by Gardai. The man appeared in custody and his solicitor told the Justice that the drug was for his own use and he had made no attempt to sell it. He pleaded guilty to the offence and wanted the matter dealt with immediate, but Supt. Richard Fahy told the court that under the Possession of Drugs Act he had to get the approval of the Attorney General before the case could proceed. The man was given bail to appear at a later court. http://www.argus.ie/news/first-drug-case-before-local-court-2820604.html
