US: Pot clubs pop up in place of marijuana dispensaries

If you've seen the movie you know the first rule of "Fight Club" is you don't talk about fight club.

You'd think the same would apply to a club formed around cannabis.

You'd be wrong.

Pot Clubs started popping up after Gov. Jan Brewer put a hold on medical marijuana dispensaries opening in the Valley.

Businesses like the 2811 Club don't shy away from cameras and cops. They're in strip malls throughout the Valley, giving medical marijuana patients a go-between to get the goods.

From the lobby it looks like your typical doctor's office, but when patients take a step closer to the window and they see you need a fingerprint scan to even get in.

Once you're past security you've entered a different world.

"More like a Starbucks or McDonalds rather than a hippie shop from Southern California," said manager Allan Sobol of the 2811 Club.

Sobol said the 2811 Club is perfectly legal, based off a loophole he found in Arizona's law.

"It's Arizona Revised Statute 36-2811, that's where we got the name for the club that allowed patients to transfer marijuana to qualified patients so long as there was nothing of value," Sobol said.

People with their medical marijuana card can become members of the club and pick up a free pot sample.

"Not sell it to you, give it to you," Sobol clarified.

The club also offers cannabis classes on how to grow it, smoke it, and cook with it.

"Thank God for this place," said Michael Miller.

Miller is a diabetic. He's had a leg amputated because of the disease.

"I need something to kill the pain. The pills aren't doing it," Miller explained.

Allan said Miller is the kind of patient he's here for.

"We want patients to come here knowing they have a safe, dignified, legal way to obtain the medications they voted for," Sobol said.

Sobol told CBS 5 News he invited every police agency in Maricopa County, as well as the Attorney General and Governor to check the place out.

So far, only the Phoenix Police Department has taken him up on the offer.

Right now the Attorney General's office is looking into whether these clubs are actually legal.
