The French Drug and Addiction Observer (OFDT) has announced that some 100,000 people are eking out a living in the European country out of cannabis trafficking.

According to the agency, some 100,000 people live in France through the trafficking of cannabis with a turnover that is estimated to be between 700 million and one billion euros per year, AFP reported Thursday.

The report added that small drug dealers earn between 4,500 and 10,000 euros annually from the sales of cannabis.

These drug peddlers are often under the age of 25 years. They have mostly grown up in poor neighborhoods, are school dropouts and unemployed.

An unnamed police source from Seine-Saint-Denis department in northeast Paris said that the cannabis trafficking, often mixed with other drugs being trafficked such as cocaine, is driving the economy of the area, where youth unemployment can reach 40%.

There are 1.2 million regular cannabis smokers in France, according to OFDT.
