UK: Huyton cannabis user asks judge to send him to prison Chloe Griffiths, Liverpool Echo Liverpool Echo Thursday 11 Aug 2011 Judge Stephen Clarke was considering suspending a prison sentence on Gary Murphy, 29, with a condition he attend a drug treatment and rehabilitation course. But Murphy, who has smoked cannabis since he was 10 and has five previous convictions for possessing it, urged the court instead to impose an immediate jail sentence. After being jailed for six months, Murphy shouted to the Liverpool crown court judge: “Thanks very much mate.” Judge Clarke had thanked Murphy for his “honesty” in admitting he would not be able to stick to the drug course. Ben Morris, prosecuting, told how police officers raided Murphy’s home in Barkbeth Road, Woolfall Heath, Huyton, at 9.10am on November 13 last year. They discovered a “plastic igloo” containing a hydroponics system for growing plants and cannabis flowering heads being dried. But prosecutors accepted the drugs were for Murphy’s own use.
