UK: Man grew his own cannabis to help him sleep
The Shields Gazette Saturday 13 Aug 2011 Officers found 25 plants growing in a bedroom when they raided Gary Coulson's Boldon home in February. The 35-year-old admitted the plants, along with 30 seedlings found in another bedroom, were his and pleaded guilty to a charge of producing cannabis. Newcastle Crown Court heard the potential street value of the plants was £2,681. Prosecutor Neil Pallister told the court: "He admitted he had grown the plants from cuttings. "They were for his own use and he had a £10 to £20 per day habit." Glen Gatland, defending, said Coulson has been caring for his mum and aunt, who both have brain aneurisms, and has been tested himself for the same condition. Mr Gatland added: "That, coupled with the breakdown of his marriage, led him to start taking cannabis again. "He finds it is one way he can get to sleep." Judge Brian Forster said Coulson made a "foolish decision" when he decided to grow cannabis. But the judge added: "I accept you regret what you have done." Judge Forster sentenced Coulson, of Grampion Road, West Boldon, to a community order for 12 months with supervision and 80 hours' unpaid work. http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/crime/man_grew_his_own_cannabis_to_help_him_sleep_1_3676212
