UK: Cannabis farmer Jake Dobson avoids jail term

A Selby man who grew cannabis worth thousands of pounds at his girlfriend’s house has avoided being sent to jail.

Police discovered the plants and drug-cultivating equipment when they raided the home of Jake Dobson's partner in the town last year.

The 21-year-old, who has recently become a father, was told by a judge he was on his last warning after he admitted producing 0.8kg of cannabis, which he said was for personal use and was not intended to be sold.

York Crown Court heard the drugs grown by Dobson, of Richard Street, Selby, would have had a value of between £4,500 and £5,700 if they had been sold on the street.

Matthew Donkin, prosecuting, said the plants were found when officers executed a search warrant at a house in New Church Terrace on November 30.

"The cannabis was found in the rear bedroom, with one black plastic bag containing 20 plants which were not ready for harvest, but were not far from that stage," he said.

"The officers also found equipment such as an extractor fan linked to a timer. Nobody was present at the property, but Dobson voluntarily attended a police station later that day."

Damien Morrison, defending Dobson, said: "The cannabis would not have been sold to anybody else.

"His partner has recently delivered their first child and, perhaps more than ever, he has so much to lose in providing for his family. He takes his responsibilities very seriously and assures you he will not be before the court again for any other matters whatsoever."

Dobson was given a four-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was ordered to do 120 hours' community work and pay £500 court costs.
