A DRUG dealer has been told to give up cannabis or face a lengthy prison sentence after he told police about his illegal trade.

Officers didn’t have the evidence to convict Neil Fraser Needham of supplying the drug despite finding cannabis, a grinder and £885 in cash at his home, Chris Aspinall told York Crown Court.

But he confessed everything, including how he sold the drug to friends at a profit to fund his own habit.

He then continued to get hold of cannabis and was caught twice more with the drug while on bail.

Needham, 23, of Lucas Avenue, Clifton, pleaded guilty to supplying cannabis and two charges of possessing cannabis.

"It has got to stop," the Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, told him. "If you want to carry on in the drugs scene, supplying people with cannabis, you are going to find yourself in prison for a significant period of time.

"This has been a serious warning to you as a result of your arrest by the police. Don’t ignore it."

He gave Needham a 12-month community order with nine months' supervision and 150 hours' unpaid work and confiscated the cash.

Mr Aspinall said police raided Needham's home on January 7, and found the cannabis, the grinder and cash. He told them he had bought the cannabis in two lots of 20oz. Police bailed Needham and caught him with cannabis on January 30 and March 16.

For Needham, Taryn Turner said he had a drug habit and had problems getting a job for a number of years. When in work he could afford cannabis, when out of work, he financed his cannabis taking by selling the drug to friends whom he knew were already cannabis takers.
