Like a medical marijuana from user's perspective

Billings Gazette

Tuesday 06 Sep 2011

Perspective is directly tied to perception. The view from the top of the mountain is a lot different than the views in the valley, although the landscape is technically the same. It's easy for someone who has never experienced disease or trauma to believe that certain people look too young, too healthy or too happy to need medical cannabis, that in essence they are "fakers."

The majority of those with this attitude have never been inside a medical cannabis facility nor have they ever spent time talking with a medical cannabis patient. If they had, their perspective probably would have shifted to one of empathy and understanding. Talk to the 33-year-old mother of two who was diagnosed with MS over seven years ago; or the 28-year-old with Crohn's disease or the 22-year-old with steel rods in his back from an accident. To them, this isn't an "excuse" just to be able to smoke cannabis legally. These patients chose to medicate with cannabis after conventional treatments were no longer working for them.

These patients and many others like them have shared their stories with me and told me how cannabis has helped them to get their lives back. They are now able to function at levels they hadn't previously been able to do.

Medical cannabis patients have the right to pursue happiness just like the rest of us. Why would anyone try to take that away from them or criminalize their personal choice to medicate in a way that allows them the freedom to live their lives?

Just ask yourself, "What if it was me?"
