A 52-year-old woman was today found guilty of trying to smuggle 49 kilos of cannabis into Bermuda.

Mary Darnell Johnson was caught with bricks of cannabis in her luggage as she returned to Bermuda.

The drugs were hidden in false bottoms inside her four bags.

This afternoon at Supreme Court a jury convicted her of conspiring to import a controlled drug into Bermuda. She had denied the charge.

Johnson boarded a Continental flight to Newark, New Jersey, in October 2010 and stayed for five days before returning to the island.

Customs officers checked her bags in the U.S. before she returned to the island because she appeared "nervous and fidgety".

When officers searched her luggage on October 21 they found the bags had false bottoms which contained bricks of cannabis.

She was arrested and escorted to Bermuda the next day.

Today at Supreme Court Johnson was remanded into custody until the November arraignments session when a sentencing date will be set.
