New Zealand: Tanczos hopes for pot debate

NZ City

Sunday 25 Sep 2011

An advocate for cannabis is hoping the ACT Party's stance on the drug will open up a rational debate on the issue.

Leader Don Brash is calling for the decriminalisation of cannabis saying 100 million dollars a year of taxpayer money is being used to police a law that is not working.

Former Green Party MP Nandor Tanczos says most New Zealanders want cannabis law reform of some kind.

He says he is surprised Dr Brash is not calling for the full legalisation of cannabis, a regulated market and taxing the product, as that would seem to be more consistent with ACT's philosophy

Nandor Tanczos says Don Brash tends to go for the more populist type issues and maybe he has recognised drug law reform is a populist issue.

Newstalk ZB Political Editor Barry Soper says it is surprising to hear a conservative espousing such liberal views.

He says one thing Don Brash does well is populism.

The pro-cannabis lobby has welcomed Dr Brash's call.

NORML president Phil Saxby says he is pleased support has stretched across the political spectrum.

He says it has come as a bit of a surprise.

The Prime Minister's office has released a brief statement.

A spokeswoman says National has long held the view this would be a step in the wrong direction.
