Rabat, Morocco - Some 5.528 kilogrammes of chira or resin of cannabis were seized Friday on board a gas-supply lorry from the province of Chtouka Aït Baha, in Southen Morocco, official sources said on Saturday in Rabat. The lorry driver, who managed to flee, has been declared wanted by the police, according to the sources.

Last weekend, the Moroccan police seized 1.757 tonnes of resin of cannabis near Tanger, in the North of the country.

The traffickers were planning to take the drugs across the Mediteranean.

The United Nations drugs office said that Morocco was one of the known producing nations of cannabis in the world.

In its latest report, released in June, the organization said that the cultivable area of cannabis in Morocco would reach 47,500 hectares.

Morocco cannabis is usually taken to European markets.
