US: Santa Cruz Celebrates Medical Marijuana for Ninth Year
Santa Cruz Patch Sunday 16 Oct 2011 As the U.S. federal government once again announces its misguided plans to crack down on medical marijuana dispensaries in California, the sunny, frontier city of Santa Cruz plans to celebrate the controversial medicinal herb in all its glory for the ninth year. Please come join us! On Saturday, October 22, the Wo/Men’' Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM), will be celebrating the annual WAMMfest festival. This free event will take place from 12-5 pm in San Lorenzo Park. The WAMMfest celebrations began in 2002, as a way for WAMM members to show their appreciation to the city, and thank the community for their support, after the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) brutally raided the much-loved organization that year and stole their precious medicine. Saddened, outraged, and propelled into action by the violent and unjust raid, WAMM, the city of Santa Cruz, and the County of Santa Cruz fought back. They took the DEA to court, winning a temporary injunction that protected WAMM's garden from any further federal raids, and forced the DEA to back off. WAMM is now recognized worldwide as the gold-standard of state-compliant medical cannabis collectives. Most heartwarming of all, not long after the DEA's raid on WAMM, the members of the organization were publicly given their federally-forbidden medicine at Santa Cruz City Hall--sending a clear message to Washington that our community and local government stand united with WAMM, and that we strongly support the right to use medical marijuana as part of our healthcare system here. That same year WAMM showed it's appreciation to the greater community by putting on a well-attended festival in San Lorenzo park, featuring live music, speakers, an art gallery, craft booths, delicious local food, dozens of vendors, games, prizes, and lots of information about medical cannabis, for those interested in education and political activism. This year WAMMfest promises all that and more, and it may be the best annual celebration yet. WAMMfest will be featuring live music by popular bands Moonalice, Bayonics, and The Green Lights. There will be great music all day, and an afterparty that evening at the Cypress Lounge on 120 Union Street, which starts at 9:00 pm. There will be a comfortable area at WAMMfest for "medicating" with smokable cannabis, for those qualified patients who have legally-recognized medical cannabis cards, and a station will be set up for people to write letters to their representatives in Washington about the importance of legalizing medical marijuana. Valerie Corral, who co-founded WAMM in 1993, and later helped write California’s Proposition 215 voter initiative, will be speaking at the event. "WAMM is about more than pot, it's about people," says Corral. "WAMMfest is our chance to show Santa Cruz who we are and what we stand for, while making sure they know how much we appreciate living in a supportive, compassionate community." This is also your chance to meet me! I'll be there all afternoon, with a booth set up where I’ll be selling and signing copies of my books. All of the proceeds from the sale of my books go to help support WAMM. This is a valuable opportunity to show your support for medical marijuana, enjoy some great music, and celebrate personal freedom. Looking forward to seeing you there!
