UK: Police facing 'grow your own' drug culture Robert Platt Chester First Monday 24 Oct 2011 The problem was outlined by police chiefs after it was revealed that drug-related crime in Western Cheshire had risen by more than nine per cent in the past year. Figures released by The British Crime Survey show the region is bucking the national trend and has seen crime in most categories fall by more than seven per cent when compared with the previous year. However, the statistics also show drugs-related crime rose by more than nine per cent in the Western Cheshire area, including offences such as possession and dealing from July 2010 to June 2011. Shelley Williams, spokesman for Cheshire Police, said the rise in reported drugs crime was in part due to more police activity, including 18 suspected drug dealers being arrested in Chester and Ellesmere Port in the past week. But Detective Chief Inspector Simon Price, crime area manager for the Western area, said there was a "worrying trend" of people cultivating cannabis as a means of financial gain. "There are more people who are using houses and other buildings for the purpose of growing cannabis," he said. “But this isn’t just an issue in Cheshire. Clearly there is an increase across the country when you compare to where we were 10 years ago. "It is obviously something we are well aware of and hence paying considerable attention to it. When we as a force become aware of a situation and we think someone is using a property to grow cannabis we are going to take swift action." He added there was also a "bad trend" of people using 'legal' highs and party drugs. "This is something we tend not to be as heavily involved in, but I think from a common sense perspective people need to be particularly careful with any substance they decide to use," he said. "There are a number of organisations out there who will provide good quality guidance." DCI Price added: "Our message is we are not complacent about the overall drop in crime, it is satisfactory but there is still a lot of work to be done. "We will use whatever means necessary to target those individuals who are causing the most problems." http://www.chesterfirst.co.uk/news/107394/police-facing-grow-your-own-drug-culture.aspx
