Malaysia: Man gets 10 years for drug possession

GEORGE TOWN: A futsal court caretaker was jailed 10 years and ordered to be whipped 10 times by a High Court here over a lesser charge of drug possession.

Mohamad Fisal Che Sab, 31, pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of possessing 755.5g of cannabis along Jalan Sutera in Seberang Jaya at 12.10am on Jan 6.

He was charged under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a jail term of not less than five years and at least 10 strokes of the cane.

He was originally charged with drug trafficking under Section 39 (B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which carries the mandatory death sentence.

Judicial Commissioner Mohd Amin Firdaus Abdullah ordered Mohamad Fisal to serve his jail sentence effective from his date of arrest on Jan 6.

In mitigation, defence counsel Tony Chew said Mohamad Fisal, who has no previous conviction, had promised not to repeat his mistakes.

DPP Nazlyza Mohamad Nazri prosecuted.
