The Cannabis Compound CBD

Tuscola Today

Wednesday 26 Oct 2011

According to recent preclinical data published in the journal Anesthesia and Analgesia, the administration of the non-psychotropic plant compound cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) completely prevents the onset of neuropathic, or nerve pain caused by the chemo drug Paclitaxel, which is used to treat breast cancer.

This isn't anything new. CBD has previously shown to inhibit breast cancer metastasis in preclinical settings. Back in 2007, the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics reported that "Administration of the nonpsychoactive cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) inhibits the spread of breast cancer".

Researchers believe that CBD could potentially moderate the spread of other common cancers, including colon cancer and prostate cancer. Separate studies have demonstrated that cannabinoids can inhibit cancer cell growth in animals and in culture on a wide range of tumoral cell lines – including pancreatic carcinoma and lung carcinoma.

Investigators at Madrid's Complutense University, School of Biology, recently reported in the British Journal of Cancer that THC administration decreases recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (brain) tumor growth in patients diagnosed with the disease.
Previous preclinical trials on CBD have shown the compound to be neuroprotective against alcohol-induced brain damage, stroke, and mad cow disease.

We have known about the cancer fighting agents in marijuana since 1972, when the Schaffer Commission issued "The Report of the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse". They too reported that compounds from the marijuana plant killed cancer cells in laboratory rats. They also recommended decriminalizing marijuana.

Why haven't we tried it on humans yet? The federal government is holding us back by waging war against marijuana and hemp and refusing to let our universities pursue the study of marijuana since they outlawed the study of marijuana after the Schaffer Commission report was released in 1972.
Under present law, all varieties of the marijuana plant are defined as illicit Schedule 1 controlled substances, defined as possessing a high potential for abuse, and no currently accepted medical use in treatment.

For the first time since the passage of the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 when marijuana was first outlawed, lawmakers have introduced legislation in Congress that seeks to end the federal criminalization of the personal use of marijuana. H.R. 2306, entitled "Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2011; sadly will never see a committee vote. The committee chairman, Rep. Lamar Smith has vowed to never allow the bill to get a hearing.

The passage of HR 2306 would open the doors for research to take us to new levels in cancer research.

This conspiracy against a possible cure for cancer will not change unless the people stand up and demand it.

Contact Rep. Lamar Smith and let him know how you feel. Demand that he give HR 2306 a hearing. You can contact Rep. Smith at 2409 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515.
