Indonesia: Teen to face Bali court next week

Big Pond News

Thursday 27 Oct 2011

The teenager who has been detained in Bali for allegedly having a small quantity of cannabis will face court next week.

The judge who will preside over the case, Amser Simanjuntak, confirmed the date for the trial to AAP on Thursday.

The trial is expected to last at least two weeks.

The teenager, from Morisset Park near Newcastle in NSW, will face three charges including one which carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison.

His legal team, however, remains hopeful that the court will consider the boy's age and his history of drug use and show leniency.

The teenager has been in custody in Bali for more than three weeks after he was arrested on October 4 allegedly carrying 3.6 grams of marijuana.

He is currently being held at an immigration detention centre at Jimbaran, where he is expected to remain during the trial.
