Maldives Customs Service has arrested two Maldivians for trying to smuggle more than 1.5 kg of illegal drugs into the country.

Chief Customs Officer Hussein Shaz said Ibrahim Shifahu, 23, who came to the Maldives from India on a Maldivian flight on October 7, was arrested after 27 cannabis seeds were found from his luggage and 16 cannabis seeds from his wallet.

Shaz stressed that Ismail Shafeeu, 43, who came to the Maldives from India's Chennai via Colombo on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight on October 8, was apprehended after more than one kilogram of heroin was found hidden inside a dock cleat.

"While unloading his luggage, we found unusual characteristics from the dock cleat that he brought. He hid the drugs, which was enclosed in a pipe, after separating the dock cleat," he said.

Customs claimed that the two went abroad for medical treatment but did not receive treatment from any hospital.

Police are investigating the case.
