Netherlands: Coffeeshops - ban on foreigners costing millions
Radio Netherlands Worldwide Wednesday 02 Nov 2011 Regional newspaper De Limburger reports that the reduction in turnover is equivalent to a loss of 345 full-time jobs. The paper's report is based on research commissioned by the Association of Licensed Maastricht Coffeeshops (VOCM). As from 1 October this year the city's coffeeshops have only be allowed to serve Dutch, Belgian and German customers. The measure is intended to reduce traffic near the coffeeshops and the numbers of - other - foreign customers who often congrerate near them. However, VOCM chairman Marc Josemans says these problems have in fact increased as a result of the ban. Maastricht Mayor Onno Hoes has said he needs more time to respond to the research. http://www.rnw.nl/english/bulletin/coffeeshops-ban-foreigners-costing-millions
