Scotland: Home-grown cannabis was for own use
Perthshire Advertiser Tuesday 01 Nov 2011 But Sheriff Robert McCreadie told butcher Ross Pearce (40): "Anyone who thinks of using cannabis as a recreational drug needs their head examined." The sheriff, who serves on a mental health tribunal, said the latest research had linked cannabis to schizophrenia and it was not a drug that could be taken "willy-nilly". He said some users had become "completely psychotic" and had ended up in the State Mental Hospital at Carstairs after committing horrendous offences. Sheriff McCreadie also told Pearce that the class B drug was normally the first to be used by 13 and 14-year-olds before they moved on to harder drugs such as ecstasy. Perth Sheriff Court was told that police went to Pearce's home in Eriskay Place, North Muirton, shortly before 5pm on April 28. They found two cannabis plants in a kitchen cupboard, one of which had been cut and was drying. Depute fiscal Robbie Brown said each plant could potentially produce £400 of the drug. A 5.9g piece of cannabis resin, worth around £30, was found in another part of the house. Solicitor Nicky Brown said that Pearce used cannabis recreationally but added: "He no longer smokes or partakes of this drug." Although Pearce has no previous convictions for drug use, Sheriff McCreadie called for a background report and deferred sentence until November 24.
