AN arthritis sufferer grew his own cannabis to make his own herbal pain relief, Lincoln Crown Court was told.

Michael Cunningham kept a couple of plants outside in his Mablethorpe garden, using the leaves to make cannabis tea. Andrew Scott, prosecuting, said Cunningham was arrested after police visited his premises.

Cunningham, 63, of Mile Lane, admitted unlawful production of cannabis. He was given a 12-month conditional discharge.

David Eager, defending, said Cunningham used cannabis to relieve his severe arthritis. He said Cunningham's health problems meant he was unable to smoke cannabis and used the leaves in his tea.

Judge Sean Morris told Cunningham: "There are plenty of perfectly legal alternatives to relieve arthritis. You must understand that it is against the law."
