Many think cannabis use is 'normal'

More than one in three people aged 25-34 think experimenting with cannabis is a normal part of growing up, according to a new study.

The poll showed that while 35% of people in that age category believe it is a routine thing to do, just 24% of 18 to 24-year-olds agree with the statement.

Paul Jenkins, chief executive of charity Rethink Mental Illness, who commissioned the research, said: "This is encouraging. Hopefully it means the message is getting through to younger people that cannabis can be dangerous."

He continued: "It's especially important this age group understands the risks as those in their late teens or early twenties are the most vulnerable to developing schizophrenia.

"If you use cannabis under the age of 15, you quadruple your risk of psychosis."

The sample size used for the study was 2,216.
