UK: Judge takes pity on cannabis grower Melissa Hills Echo News Friday 04 Nov 2011 George Lupson, 53, admitted growing 124 plants at his four-bedroom home in Billericay. But the judge took pity on him after hearing how much debt Lupson was in and how many family members he had lost in recent years. Judge John Brooke-Smith said: "You're obviously an intelligent man and I don't see any advantage in sending you to prison. "Sentences should be handed down to work as a deterrent, but looking at your tragic personal circumstances it is clear prison will not be constructive for you." The court heard that in 2008 Lupson, who was the landlord of the Ye Olde Green Dragon in Shenfield, lost the pub and split up with his girlfriend. In 2009, his mum died of cancer and in 2010 his cousin suddenly died of a brain tumour and then his other cousin committed suicide. Samantha Louther, prosecuting, told the court Lupson got into debt after losing the pub and borrowed up to £35,000 from a loan shark known only as Max. When Lupson could not pay the money back, Max threatened to cut his legs off with a Samurai sword unless he grew cannabis plants to repay the debts. Police found the cannabis plants growing in three bedrooms of the house with special lighting to help them grow. Lupson handed himself into police the next day and confessed to growing the plants between October 2010 and February 2011. He pleaded guilty to growing class B drugs, with a street value of £57,050 and stealing more than £11,000 of electricity. Lupson was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years and a 12-month supervision order. http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/9343583.Judge_takes_pity_on_cannabis_grower/
