UK: Dunmow cannabis dealer faces prison
Herts and Essex Observer Thursday 10 Nov 2011 scales of justiceSentencing of HGV driver Paul Wilks, 34, of Barley Lane, has been adjourned until next month, but he has been warned he is likely to be jailed. Wilks, a drug user for 18 years, told Chelmsford Crown Court that he had seen two men walking into a field with a large pink bag while he was parked-up in a layby on the A414 at Ongar. He said that they returned without it and that after they drove off, he went looking for the bag with his Jack Russell dog and found it in a ditch behind some brambles and nettles. He said he realised what was inside and took it to his garage unit at Hales Farm, High Cross Lane, Little Canfield because he was a drug user. He said that he and his two younger brothers regularly bought and smoked cannabis and that he put the largest of the two packages in a compost wheelie bin, but started using the rest. He claimed he had given some to his brothers and a few other people. However, when police raided his lock-up on May 27 this year they found the pink bag, a total of 926g of herbal cannabis with a street value of £9,260, plastic bags, scales and a grinder containing cannabis. They also found scales, a quantity of cannabis, another grinder, and more bags, at the home of Wilks' girlfriend in Conifer Way, Dunmow, where he was living, said the prosecution. Wilks, who pleaded guilty to possessing 926g of the class B drug with intent to supply on May 27 this year, denied he sold any though he admitted his account sounded "very incredible". The short hearing, prior to sentencing, was to determine how Wilks came to have that amount of cannabis. Judge David Turner QC said: "I have not the slightest doubt that he has lied. His explanation is little short of absurd. I simply don't believe him. He has lied. In short I completely and utterly reject his story. It strikes me as ridiculous." The judge added: "He is a low grade retailer with an intention to deal. I am satisfied he intended to pass on some of these drugs for money. I am satisfied this was a comparatively small time operation." http://www.hertsandessexobserver.co.uk/Dunmow-Stansted/Cannabis-dealer-faces-prison-10112011.htm
