UK: Drug user escapes jail after police house raid

Lancashire Evening Post

Sunday 13 Nov 2011

A cannabis user escaped jail after police raided his home and found more than £800 of the drug.

Zoheb Patel, 26, of Trafford Street, Plungington, Preston, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.

Officers raided his home at 5.30pm on February 28 for an unrelated matter but no charges were brought.

Patel, who runs a gadgets and computer shop in Preston, told them he had around £800 of the Class B drug in his bedroom.

They discovered 42 £20 bags of the drug which he said was for personal use.

He said a friend had been sent to prison in Manchester so he paid £300 for £1000 of cannabis for personal use.

Paul Murphy, prosecuting, said: "The defendant admitted that he had £800 of cannabis in his bedroom."

Patel had admitted being a cannabis user for a number of years, spending up to £30 a day on his habit.

He said he committed the offence to get the drug for cheap.

Andrew Long, defending, said: "He admitted it in interview. His does not have a bad record.

"This is not a bad person we are dealing with.

"He has settled down with a sensible girl who disapproves of his drug use."

He told Preston Court Crown Mr Patel had managed to reduce his drug use by one third.

Mr Long added: "He pleaded guilty. He is sorry.

"He is trying to put his life back on track."

He also told the court the defendant's business was just becoming profitable.

Due to the circumstances, the judge Recorder Roger Farley said that he felt able to give Patel a non-custodial sentence.

At the sentencing hearing, Patel was made the subject of a 12 month supervision order and a six month drug rehabilitation requirement.
