Australia: Parents testing schoolies for drug use

The West

Wednesday 16 Nov 2011

Teenagers attending schoolies events in NSW have more than police drug busts to fear, with parents now buying up special chemical wipes to secretly monitor if their kids are users.

Called Drug Guard, the wipes can detect traces of cannabis, ecstasy and other drugs simply by being exposed to wallets or mobile phones.

With schoolies week - the annual frenzy of grog-fuelled revelling - just around the corner, an Australian company says parents are snapping up the home drug testing kits.

"When they come back, parents don't even have to tell them - they can just test their mobile phone or their wallets, quite a few different items that belong to them," said importer Craig Hart.

The kit has been used overseas for law enforcement purposes and by bosses hunting for signs of illicit drug use in the workplace.

Mr Hart said he'd seen demand for the kits rise in Australia during the run-up to schoolies week, which kicks off at the end of November.
