UK: Jail for man who grew drugs in his Leeds council flat

Yorkshire Evening Post

Wednesday 23 Nov 2011

A man who had cannabis worth more than £15,000 growing in his council flat when police raided it has been jailed.

John Holehan, 57, was sent to prison for nine months by a judge who said such offending had become a "cottage industry" in Leeds.

Officers executed a search warrant at Holehan's home at The Close, Saxton Gardens, on February 13 this year.

There they found 44 cannabis plants taking up more than half of the space inside the property.

Jonathan Sharpe, prosecuting at Leeds Crown Court, said heating, lighting and watering equipment was also found along with liquid fertiliser and notes about cultivating the illegal plants.

The total yield of the plants was estimated at £14.500 and £737 worth of the prepared drug was also seized.

Holehan was not at home at the time of the raid but handed himself in at Stainbeck police station the next day.

In interview he admitted having full knowledge of the operation.

He said a friend, who he refused to name, brought the equipment to his home at Christmas and they had set it up together. Holehan said his friend had then told him how to look after the plants and he had been doing so ever since. He pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis.

The court heard Holehan has offences dating back to 1973, including one for drug possession in 1996.

Sukbir Bassra, mitigating, said Holehan had only agreed to look after the plants for a short time but his friend refused to take the equipment back.

He said: "This is somebody who had some difficulties in the past. He has been in trouble as a youth but he is not a persistent offender and had been out of trouble for a long time."

Jailing him, judge Kerry Macgill said: "This is becoming a cottage industry now. People seem to say 'well I will grow cannabis and it will be alright'. Well I'm sorry Mr Holehan, but it isn't alright."
