NI: Man gets two years for possession of cannabis

A man who admitted possessing almost half a kilogramme of cannabis resin after it was found by police in a taxi has been jailed.

Christopher Noel Faulkner (33), from Clooney Mews in the Waterside area of Derry, was jailed for two years after admitting charges of possessing the drug and possessing it with intent to supply.

His co-accused, Brendan Beattie (28), with an address at Winchester Park in the Waterside, but who currently lives in Muff, Co Donegal, is to be sentenced at a later date.

Beattie, a recovering drug addict, has pleaded guilty to possessing the cannabis resin.

At the Crown Court in Derry yesterday, Judge Piers Grant was told both men were caught by police on the Clooney Road with the drugs when returning to Derry in a taxi after travelling to Ballykelly and Limavady on December 9, 2009.

The court was told the drugs, valued at £2,500, were found in the footwell of the front passenger seat. After the discovery, Faulkner's flat was searched and police found three small pieces of cannabis resin and scales.

Beattie's case is to be mentioned again on December 7.
