Canada: Bikini budtenders' backlash: Fury from patients over sexy medical marijuana advertising as pot is 'marketed like beer '

The medicinal cannabis community has come under fire after growing numbers of businesses have taken to using models in skimpy costumes and bikinis to flog their products.

Pot dispensaries featuring 'bikini budtenders' have been likened to the beer industry's habit of using women in swimwear for their promotions to appeal to a largely male audience.

Californian voters legalised the use of medical marijuana 15 years ago due to its benefits for AIDS and cancer patients.

Medical marijuana has also been proved to be beneficial for multiple sclerosis patients or car accident victims who suffer from chronic pain.

However businesses like the California Organic Collective in Los Angeles and the Reserve dispensary in Sacramento appeal to the more recreational side of the industry, using girls in nurse outfits and bikinis smoking marijuana.

'They claim to be offering medicine, yet they're using marketing techniques reminiscent of some of the lowest standards of the beer industry,' John Lovell, a lobbyist for the California Narcotics Officers Association told the Sacramento Bee.

Ryan Landers, a Sacramento AIDS patient who leads a medical marijuana policy group called 'the Compassionate Coalition', said trade shows featuring sexy advertising 'make my job a hell of a lot harder to convince people what we're doing is true and real'.

The 420 nurses, who wear hot pants sporting green marijuana symbols, have become a cultural phenomenon. They appear regularly at trade shows and in YouTube videos, posing suggestively with pot and exotic smoking accessories, where they target a mostly male crowd.

Vanessa Sahagun, who started the company, said the models earn $10 to $25 an hour working in dispensaries or passing out business cards for doctors recommending marijuana.

Ngaio Bealum, publisher of a marijuana lifestyle magazine called West Coast Cannabis, also told the Sacramento Bee: 'The marijuana industry is male-dominated, and dudes love to look at hot chicks.'
