UK: Cannabis smoker grew it to ease his back pain
Halifax Courier Monday 28 Nov 2011 Robin Byrne, 52, set up a small-scale farm at his home in South Selby, Illingworth, Halifax, to cope with a back injury, a court heard. When police raided the flat last October they found six plants capable of yielding skunk worth £2,000, and growing paraphernalia was also seized. Prosecutor James Keeley told Bradford Crown Court: "The bedroom was full of equipment for the production of cannabis. "On entering there was a large water tank, next to this on the floor there were 12 plant pots ready with filters and an extractor system attached to the ceiling." He was arrested and admitted the plants were his, for personal use. He told police he spent £200 a week on drugs. Officers searched the flat again in May this year while he was on bail and found two wraps of cocaine and a bag of cannabis. Mr Keeley said: "They found a clear plastic bag containing bush and a white substance wrapped in cling film. "Two blades with white residue were found on the living room floor along with a set of digital scales." Byrne, who limped into the dock using a crutch, admitted producing and possessing a class B drug as well as possessing a class A drug. A report from a consultant neurosurgeon confirmed he could be suffering discomfort at the site of an operation but any pain was unlikely to be severe. Judge John Potter sentenced Byrne to a two-year community order with supervision. He must also abide by a curfew between 7pm and 7am for the next three months. Byrne, who has previous convictions for drugs and dishonesty offences, was warned he would get no more chances. Judge Potter said: "You chose misguidedly and unlawfully to deal with pain relief by taking drugs, some of which you grew. "If you continue to do that you will find yourself going to prison. "There are better ways to deal with pain than by filling your body with poison like cannabis." http://www.halifaxcourier.co.uk/news/local/cannabis_smoker_grew_it_to_ease_his_back_pain_1_4010450
