UK: Neighbours smelt cannabis growing in Balsall Common man's house

A BALSALL Common man was caught growing 85 cannabis plants at his home after neighbours reported the suspicious smell coming from the house.

But at Warwick Crown Court Aaron Smith, who had admitted producing cannabis, escaped being jailed after it was accepted it was all for his own use.

Smith, 36, of Laurels Crescent, Balsall Common, was sentenced to six months in jail suspended for a year and ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work and to pay £200 costs.

Prosecutor Tariq Shakoor said that on August 24 the police executed a warrant at Smith’s home, and as soon as they went in they could smell cannabis.

Upstairs they found a hydroponic system with 85 plants being grown in a hallway cupboard and two bedrooms; with powerful growing lights, extractor fans and a filtration system.

Sean Logan, defending, said: "There was no question of supply at all, not even on a social basis to friends. There was no by-passing of the electrical supply.

"Although the number of plants seems high, only 20 or so of them were in any form of maturity, and none of them were capable of being harvested."
