Malawi’s 'best and finest' cannabis has street value of K1.4bn

BLANTYRE--Hats off to Malawi's "best and finest" Chamba or cannabis with a street value of K1.4 billion a year, according to the World Bank.

The Sunday Times quoted the report, titled "Ill-gotten Money and the Economy: The Experience of Malawi and Namibia," saying the street value is 0.2 percent of the country's income, or GDP.

The report says despite this, Malawi growers, mostly in central and northern regions, are getting peanuts out of this illicit trade because the product, described by the Bank as the "best and finest" in the world, is exported informally with Malawi losing out.

"Since Malawi farmers receive only about a fifth of the price for which it is being sold in foreign consumer markets, the positive effect of the production of cannabis on the overall Malawi economy is negligible," the report said.

The country produces up to 70,000 kilos a year but the growing and selling of Chamba is an offence in Malawi.

The only visible efforts to stop its cultivation are periodic raids by police and this involves destroying fields, burning it and arresting traffickers.

The report said anti-drug policies are affected by corrupt practices within the police forces and little effort is made to gain intelligence about the organisations behind the trade within Malawi and across its borders.

Both foreigners and Malawians are often arrested dealing in this cannabis trade.
