UK: Drug grower 'given chance'
Peterlee Mail Tuesday 13 Dec 2011 Police discovered 25 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £10,000 growing in the loft of Robert Brown’s home in Hartlepool. The set-up, complete with heat lamps, transformers and timers, was uncovered when police raided the house in Brenda Road, on May 20. Carla Abrantes-Stanworth, prosecuting, at Teesside Crown Court, said: “During the search, 25 cannabis plants were found growing in a purpose-made area in the loft. "The defendant was the only person present at the scene and was arrested. "He stated 'the cannabis plants are mine. I grew it.'" Tests showed the plants were female and capable of producing the stronger strain of the drug known as skunk. Despite the high potential value of the cannabis, Brown, 51, insisted it was largely for his own use and he was not a dealer. He admitted a charge of production of a Class B drug. Jim Withyman, mitigating, said: "He has effectively spent the last 20 years living a law-abiding life. "He has been the registered carer for his daughter for six years. "The defendant was not a commercial grower. "He intended to store the cannabis he got and stop the growth. "He would have supplied a small amount to family and friends had they asked." Mr Withyman, added Brown, of Brenda Road, Hartlepool, had now stopped smoking altogether and had a job offer as an asbestos remover. He was given 12-months prison, which was suspended for two years, with one year probation and 150-hours community work. Sentencing, Judge George Moorhouse said: "People who get involved in drugs at whatever level are committing a very serious offence which fully justifies a custodial sentence. "Taking all matters into account I have decided not to send you away today. "You have been given a chance. Take advantage of it." http://www.peterleemail.co.uk/news/local/drug_grower_given_chance_1_4055012
