Canada: Letter: Cannabis gives us medical relief

Re: "We want grow-op off our street," by L. McAleese, Letters, Dec. 13.

I have just received a quadruple bypass open heart surgery, and the letter written by L. McAleese almost returned me to the hospital.

My wife and I are private individuals trying to live within the confines of our ailments and the medicines our bodies will tolerate after years of trying one pharmaceutical after another to deal with arthritic pain, inflammation, muscle cramps and spasms and peripheral neuropathic pain from diabetes.

I begin cardiac rehabilitation therapy this week but when I finish at the end of January - as I told the mayor - I am perfectly willing to speak to the issues some may have about safety and some of the research and chemistry of the cannabis plant that influences over 10,000 competent adult Canadians to seek federally exempt status to use and over 5,000 to produce their own medical quality cannabis.

Cannabis has been a lifesaver for my wife and I and we hope to continue to use it in peace and privacy. The World Health Organization to which our country is signatory defines "health" not as an absence of disease or infirmity, but as an increased feeling of physical, emotional and social well-being.

Cannabis really works on the first two for my wife and me and the sup-port of compassionate family, friends and community members can really help with the social well-being, especially at this festive time.

Once I finish cardio rehab I will be happy to address concerns.
