Australia: Can a GP prescribe cannabis?

There is a report this morning that a serial rapist from Queensland has been given permission by a court to access marijuana for medical purposes, provided he obtains a prescription from a doctor.

The man's doctor has recommended he be allowed to use cannabis to relieve the pain of his terminal illness - but does the law allow Queensland doctors to prescribe marijuana?

Dr Richard Kidd is president of the AMA in Queensland.
