UK: Broken hearted Oldbury cannabis farmer avoids jail
Halesowen News Tuesday 20 Dec 2011 Tony Hannibal went "seriously off the rails" and he began smoking the controlled drug heavily when his sweetheart decided to call it a day. "When the lady he doted on on left him for good reasons or ill he could not cope and he began spending up to £400 a week on drugs which he could not sustain through his legitimate income," said Mr Jas Mann defending. He added, "He started associating with other drug users and he was on the slippery slope that lead him to agree to set up the drug factory - a decision he will regret for the rest of his life.!" Hannibal had been working extremely hard for a private ambulance service and he had started a university degree course but that had now all been brought to a halt, added Mr Mann. The 27 year old of Manor Road admitted producing cannabis and he was given a 12 month jail term suspended for 18 months, ordered to carry out 150 hours Community Punishment and to obey a six month nighttime curfew order. Judge John Wait told Hannibal, a man of previous good character, he was extremely fortunate not to be going straight into custody. "You were a decent young man and you went seriously off the rails when your relationship ended," said the Judge. "I accept this was the trigger for this serious offence and that you have now started to put your life right with the help of your family." Mr Mark Rees prosecuting told Wolverhampton Crown Court that police officers found 150 cannabis plants being cultivated at a flat rented for the purpose in Causeway Green Road, Oldbury. The officers went to the property after reports of a burglary and they discovered it had been badly damaged during the installation of the heating and lighting systems needed to grow the plants. Mr Rees said Hannibal told police he had turned to cannabis when his girlfriend left him and added, "Two other people suggested to him that he rent a flat to grow the drug and they would split the proceeds three ways." The court was told Hannibal who "shut himself away" when his girlfriend ended the relationship was now unemployed and he had been forced to pull out of his university course because of his drug taking. http://www.halesowennews.co.uk/news/9428861.Broken_hearted_Oldbury_cannabis_farmer_avoids_jail/
