Wales: Gwent drug seizures topped 2,000 last year Alisa Chalk South Wales Argus Tuesday 03 Jan 2012 Figures from the Home Office show Gwent Police made a total of 2,268 drug seizures in 2010/11, compared with 1,320 in 2001, an increase of 948 seizures (71 per cent). Seizures were also up from last year's 2009/2010 total of 2,107, an increase of 161 (eight per cent). The Home Office changed the way drug seizures were categorised in 2006 to financial years rather than calendar years in order to make the figures comparable to other crime publications. Seizures can include more than one drug type . Out of the 2,268 confiscations in 2010/11, 269 were class A drugs including 108 cocaine, 24 crack, 21 ecstasy, 108 heroin, six methadone and two morphine. Cannabis made up the bulk of the 1,956 class B seizures, with 1,674 confiscations, plus a further 247 amphetamine seizures. There were 115 class C seizures, including five anabolic steroids confiscations, 64 of benzodiazepine, 35 ketamine, and four temazepam. The figures show Gwent Police seized a total of 0.3kilogrammes of cocaine, 0.2 kilogrammes of crack, 200 doses of ecstasy, 0.4kilogrammes of heroin,100 doses of methadone and 700 morphine doses. A total of 25.3kilogrammes of herbal cannabis was confiscated, along with 2.7kilogrammes of cannabis resin, 12,993 cannabis plants and 15.2kilogrammes of amphetamines. Officers also seized 100 doses of anabolic steroids, 1,700 doses of benzodiazepines, 0.1kilogrammes of ketamine and 200 doses of temazepam. A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: "Our continued efforts in tackling the supply and distribution of illegal drugs has seen the number of seizures in the force area increase. Ultimately this prevents the criminal activity of dealers, and stops drugs getting onto our streets and into our communities. "We have specialist officers who are dedicated to targeting illegal drug activity and organised criminality. We also work closely with our community to gain intelligence and take the appropriate action against those involved." http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/9446977.Gwent_drug_seizures_topped_2_000_last_year/
