A man was arrested for possession of cannabis after he was pulled over by police in South Wimbledon at 10.30 this morning.

The man, who was driving a black BMW, was cuffed at the scene as officers searched his car for more of the illegal substance.

The arrest comes in light of the recent formation of an expert panel set up to consider establishing a new offence for drug driving.

As he was being cuffed the man said: "I haven't got no convictions, what do you think I'm going to do to you."

A police officer at the scene said the man was being taken to Sutton Police Station.

In January 2009 cannabis was reclassified from a Class C to a Class B drug, meaning that the maximum jail sentence for possession was increased from 2 years to 5 years.

The officer could not reveal any more information at this stage.
