US: Washington to take next to step to legalizing marijuana

The days of marijuana being legal in America maybe closer then we think. Marijuana activists in Washington are sponsoring a ballot initiative that would legalize marijuana in the state for those age 21 and over. If passed citizens will be able to possess up to an oz of marijuana legally, however anything over 42 grams can still be considered a felony.

New Approach Washington has announced that they have collected over 300,000 signatures, which is well over what is necessary to get prop 502 on the ballot in November of 2012. The proposition would be the first step towards taking a common sense approach to marijuana use. Marijuana would be regulated by the Liquor Control Board and will be taxable to any one age 21 and over. The proposition will create jobs, market and over $200 million in tax revenue.

There are some down sides however, citizens will not be able to grow marijuana at home. They will only be able to purchase from state-licensed stores with regulated tax. Users will also be subject to DUI laws with no more then five nano-grams per milliliter of THC level, which effect medical marijuana patients by subjecting them to arrest even if they are not impaired. However these are just the first stages of the law and revisions are sure to be made.
