UK: Big drugs haul at Tilbury

The Enquirer

Sunday 08 Jan 2012

HERBAL cannabis worth an estimated £4.8 million has been seized by UK Border agency officers at the Port of Tilbury.

The 1.7 tonnes was seized last Thursday from a consignment that had been shipped to the UK from Cuba, via Jamaica and Rotterdam.

In an attempt to sneak their illegal goods through the UK's border controls the smugglers had stashed the drugs inside a container carrying a legitimate cargo of molasses.

Goff Hicks, the Agency's assistant director at the port said: “When our officers opened the container they found the drugs in 53 individual synthetic sacks on top of a tank carrying the molasses.

"It is not unusual for smugglers to hi-jack perfectly innocent shipments in the hope that they will evade detection, but our border officers are alert to these criminals' operandi.

"This is a major detection that has not only prevented a sizeable quantity of harmful drugs from hitting the UK's streets, but also dealt a big financial blow to the smugglers.

"No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

"Our officers use an array of hi-tech equipment including x-ray scanning to weed out the illegal goods hidden inside containers that pass through Tilbury.!"
