UK: Drug user who flouted law is sent to prison
Western Morning News Tuesday 10 Jan 2012 Justin Betts, 37, set up a cannabis farm in a specially constructed tent in the spare bedroom of his home and claimed that he was going to smoke the harvest from all 50 plants. He told police and probation officers that he was not doing anyone else any harm and had been criminalised by society, Exeter Crown Court was told. Betts, of Church Street, Paignton, admitted producing cannabis and was jailed for 12 months by judge Phillip Wassall. He told him: "You have a substantial record for using cannabis and this is the third time you have been before a court for producing it. "I accept you had no intention of selling it and your motivation was to grow it for yourself. "You are committed to the use of cannabis and you see nothing wrong with what you have done. You blame everyone else for the position you are in accept no responsibility." The judge said Betts had "no intention of reforming". He added: "I have no doubt at all you are going to be producing cannabis again. Your whole attitude is that you do not want to explore the motivations behind your lifestyle. "You made it clear to the probation officer that you had been arrested and prosecuted for behaviour that does not affect anyone else. "The officer described being disappointed by your tone and that all you wanted to discuss were your political views. You see yourself as victimised by society and penalised by a cruel system which does not let you live as you would wish. "It would be entirely wrong in the light of your convictions not to send you to prison." Alex Allsop, prosecuting, said police raided Betts' home and found a sophisticated growing tent set up in his spare bedroom with 50 plants at various stages of maturity. Betts told them he was a heavy user of the drug and they were all for his own personal consumption. Kevin Hopper, defending, said: "He is a long time, heavy cannabis user and there is no evidence of any intention to supply. A large number of the plants were dead or dying so the yield would have been low." http://www.thisissouthdevon.co.uk/Drug-user-flouted-law-sent-prison/story-14379666-detail/story.html
