Zambia: Man gets 10 years for trafficking in cannabis Davies M.M Chanda Times of Zambia Thursday 12 Jan 2012 Judge Timothy Katanekwa jailed Kapalu Chingangu, unemployed of Kawama East Township in Mufulira after he was convicted by the magistrate’s court. The case was referred to the High Court for sentencing. Chingangu was arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) on September 11 last year for trafficking in 1.023 kilogrammes of marijuana in Mufulira. DEC officers received a tip from members of the public that Chingangu had been selling marijuana at his house. When officers reached his house, Chingangu bolted and threw away the bag containing the marijuana. The officers apprehended him and upon questioning him, he readily admitted that the marijuana which was in the bag was his and was for sale Mr Justice Katanekwa said he would send Chingangu to jail for 10 years which was the minimum sentence for a second offender. Chingangu was given a six month sentence in February last year for illegal possession of marijuana. "This does not show that you are remorseful because the period you committed another crime after being released from jail was too short," justice Katanekwa said. http://www.times.co.zm/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4199%3Aman-gets-10-years-for-trafficking-in-cannabis-&catid=36%3Alocal-news&Itemid=27
