UK: Bungling drug grower caught after dumping plants – and letter

Western Morning News

Monday 16 Jan 2012

A bungling drug grower is facing jail after dumping unusable parts of cannabis plants in a bin bag which also contained a letter with his address on it.

Anthony Smith, 41, was initially investigated for fly tipping, but police were called when council workers realised that the five bags he dumped contained cannabis.

Officers found a letter inside one of the bags which took them straight to Smith's cannabis farm in a rented property at Shaldon, near Teignmouth.

He had 96 plants inside which were capable of producing £32,000 worth of the drug, Exeter Crown Court was told.

Smith, of Haslam Road, Torquay, admitted being concerned in the production of cannabis and possessing a small amount of cocaine for his own use.

David Sapiecha, prosecuting, said 96 plants were found at Commons Lane, Shaldon, after a joint inquiry by Teignbridge Council and the police.

He said: "Inside one of the sacks was found the letter that led to the discovery of the hydroponic set-up."

The case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report.
