Canada: The legalization of pot

Montreal Gazette

Wednesday 18 Jan 2012

Henry Aubin points to the Liberal Party resolution's statement that cannabis prohibition has "exhausted billions of dollars." That's true. However, the key reason for legalizing cannabis is the protection of community health and safety.

Today the cannabis consumed by Canadians is illegal. As such, it poses a critical risk to communities because of the violence that organized-crime groups use to protect their huge profits. Law enforcement has been unable to control cannabis supply despite budget increases.

The Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey found that cannabis use among high-school students has doubled since the early 1990s, even though cannabis arrests in Canada have increased by 70 per cent during the same period.

In the U.S., the National Institutes on Drug Abuse reports that cannabis has remained "almost universally available to American 12th graders."

Limiting access to cannabis through taxes and age restrictions is the most effective way to ensure this drug is consumed with as little risk as possible. Our approach isn't working in keeping Canadians - and Canadian youth - safe.
